Chinook Axial Flux Motor for Pedicabs (500W)
Technical Note: Chinook Alpha (Rev 1.0) Integration. This submission showcases the world’s first PCB Stator optimized for sustainable bamboo-composite frames. The 500W axial flux power stage and SHM Logic Board are design-verified for real-time stress monitoring of natural fiber joints. We invite the Wpsload Engineering Team to collaborate on the final DFM (Design for Manufacturing) review, specifically regarding 4oz copper trace thermal management and high-clearance safety rules, to ensure maximum efficiency for urban passenger duty.
THE CHINOOK - Sustainable Urban Mobility Redefined
1. VISION: THE BAMBOO AXIAL FLUX REVOLUTION
The Chinook is not just a pedicab; it is a validation platform for the world's most energy-efficient 3-person vehicle. By pairing an ultra-light PCB Stator Axial Flux Motor with a structural Basalt-Carbon Bamboo Chassis, we have bridged the gap between artisanal sustainability and high-performance industrial engineering.
2. TECHNICAL SYNERGY: MOTOR & CHASSIS
The core innovation lies in the weight-to-torque ratio. Under strict 500W urban power caps, every gram saved in the chassis allows for more hill-climbing torque and passenger payload.
The Motor: A 130mm PCB Stator design that is 70% lighter than traditional radial flux motors, offering zero magnetic cogging for effortless pedaling and regenerative braking.
The Chassis (The Hybrid Advantage): We have moved from a heavy 14-layer laminate to a Structural Bamboo Pole Frame reinforced with a Basalt-Carbon Hybrid Wrap.
Basalt Fiber: Provides high impact toughness and vibration dampening, crucial for Vancouver's urban terrain.
Carbon Fiber: Provides the longitudinal stiffness required to prevent frame flex under the 500kg payload of the Chinook.
Consolidation: Utilizing a DIY high-pressure heat-shrink method (1L PET) to ensure monolithic structural joints without the cost of industrial autoclaves.
3. BUILT-IN INTELLIGENCE: STRUCTURAL HEALTH MONITORING (SHM)
The Chinook’s Logic Board does more than control the motor; it monitors the vehicle's heartbeat. Using AD8226 instrumentation amplifiers and ADS1115 ADCs, the system tracks stress at the basalt-carbon joints in real-time. This data-driven approach to wood-composite construction allows us to prove the safety of bamboo to city engineers and licensing boards.
4. SUSTAINABILITY & OPEN-SOURCE IMPACT
Designed in collaboration with the UBC BAM Lab, the Chinook uses local Vancouver supply chains (Coolite Bamboo). We are documenting the entire build process in a transparent "Build Guide" to empower the global DIY and sustainable transport communities.
